Morocco made history as the first African nation to reach the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. The Atlas Lions edged the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw that lasted 120 minutes.

Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead in the 72nd minute, capitalising after Crysencio Summerville was brought down by Mazraoui. Morocco hit back when Issa Diop powered home a header to level the match.

The Netherlands crumbled during the penalty shootout, with Quentin Timber, Summerville and Justin Kluivert all missing their spot-kicks. Morocco will now face co-hosts Canada in the last-16 clash.
