Olusegun Mimiko, the former Ondo State governor, has joined the All Progressives Congress. He made the switch to support President Bola Tinubu's administration.
Mimiko officially registered with the party at his Ward 7 secretariat in Ondo City on Thursday. He told party officials that Nigeria needs backing for its current development agenda.
"There are good things happening under this president," he noted. "Though more work remains, I'm here to support efforts keeping Nigeria on track for peace and progress."
He singled out two initiatives for praise. NELFUND, which expands education access, impressed him greatly.
Mimiko also backed the government's police decentralization push. As a longtime advocate for state police, he sees this as another reason to join APC ranks.
Party officials gave him a warm welcome at the event. Ondo APC chairman Babatunde Kolawole led the reception, alongside ward and local government party executives.
Kolawole praised Mimiko's track record in public service. "He's a progressive through and through," the chairman told gathered party members.
According to Kolawole, Tinubu's policies align with progressive ideals. Results from these initiatives are winning over other development-minded Nigerians.
Joseph Akinlaja, a former federal lawmaker, attended the ceremony. He represents Ondo East and West in the House of Representatives.
Akinlaja noted that Mimiko's arrival completes a larger political shift. Several associates had already moved to APC before the last governorship election.
"Some of us came over earlier, mostly with his blessing," Akinlaja explained. "We're relieved he's finally joined us now."
Akinlaja expressed confidence in upcoming elections. He expects APC candidates to sweep Ondo State contests with Mimiko's support.
Mimiko had quit the Peoples Democratic Party more than a month prior. He'd maintained low visibility within PDP ranks before his departure.
His exit from PDP came as no shock to observers. Close allies had already abandoned the party for APC during the recent gubernatorial race.
Senior government figures attended Thursday's event. Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker Olamide Oladiji was present.
Former state commissioners also showed up. Wale Akinlosotu and Lola Fagbemi both attended the ceremony.
Taiwo Fasoranti, a onetime Secretary to the State Government, was there. Senator Gbenga Ogunniya and businessman Abiola Makinde rounded out the dignitaries.
Mimiko's defection strengthens APC's position in his home state. Party strategists believe his influence will boost electoral prospects.
