Soldiers repelled a major attack on military installations in Yobe State on Thursday morning. The assault targeted the 27 Brigade Headquarters and Buni Gari checkpoint in Gujba Local Government Area.
Suspected ISWAP fighters launched the coordinated offensive from multiple directions under cover of darkness. But troops mounted fierce resistance and forced the insurgents to retreat after sustained gunfire exchanges.
Over 50 terrorists were killed in the operation, according to a statement released Friday. Several others managed to escape but sustained injuries during their withdrawal.
Lt. Col.
Sani Uba, Media Information Officer at the Joint Task Force headquarters, disclosed the details. He confirmed that troops maintained full control of the military formation throughout the encounter.
No breach was recorded at either facility, officials said. Troops conducted exploitation operations immediately after the fighting ended.
Soldiers recovered numerous weapons and ammunition during follow-up searches. Items seized included AK-47 rifles, General Purpose Machine Guns, and Rocket-Propelled Grenade tubes.
RPG bombs, ammunition boxes, magazines, and Improvised Explosive Device canisters were also recovered. The cache represented significant losses for the terrorist group.
Air Component units joined the operation with interdiction missions. Warplanes targeted fleeing insurgents along their withdrawal routes, contributing to the casualty toll.
The military acknowledged that two soldiers died during the engagement. Several other personnel sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
Some military equipment sustained minor damage in the battle. Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and gun trucks were among the affected assets.
Follow-up operations are ongoing in the area. Troops and allied volunteer forces are hunting fleeing terrorists to prevent them from regrouping.
