Major-General Laka Takes Charge at NCTC: A New Era in Counter-terrorism Efforts in Nigeria

Major-General Adamu Laka has assumed office as the new Coordinator of the National Counter-terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Abuja, Nigeria.
This strategic appointment by President Bola Tinubu marks a pivotal shift in counter-terrorism efforts in the country, as Laka steps in to replace the outgoing coordinator, Yaminu Musa, who has led the NCTC since 2016.
During the handover ceremony, Laka addressed the pressing issue of terrorism, not only in Nigeria but globally, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the threat head-on.
He called for a collective effort from the NCTC staff and the broader administration to combat terrorism and ensure a peaceful future for Nigeria.
Laka’s vision includes fostering unity among the staff and utilizing their collective expertise to tackle the challenges posed by terrorism effectively.
“So I expect us to all drop our baggage outside, come together and work for the greater good of Nigeria,” said Laka, highlighting the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving the NCTC’s objectives.
He further underscored the necessity of a comprehensive approach to counter-terrorism, stating, “Nigeria and the world in general are facing the threats of terrorism, and if we don’t come together to address it now while we have the chance to, will it be when we go back to our villages in Ogbomoso or somewhere else that we will be calling those in the realms of power to help us do this?”
Outgoing coordinator Yaminu Musa reflected on his tenure and the achievements of the NCTC under his leadership.
He expressed pride in the centre’s role in providing strategic guidance to armed forces on counter-terrorism issues, emphasizing its goal to become a center of excellence for counter-terrorism activities in Nigeria.
Musa also highlighted the importance of research and innovation in driving a stronger response to counter terrorism and violent extremism.
As Major-General Laka takes the helm at the NCTC, the hope is that his extensive experience and leadership will bolster Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and contribute to a safer and more secure future for the nation.
