The Labour Party (LP) has reported that its National Chairman, Julius Abure, escaped an assassination attempt at his Abuja residence early on Wednesday morning.
The incident was followed by a mysterious fire that engulfed his home around 1 a.m., while Abure and his family were asleep.
According to a statement by Obiora Ifoh, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Abure and his family were trapped inside the burning house as the fire had reached the staircase.
However, they were saved by the intervention of their neighbours and security men living in the compound, who bravely pulled down one of the windows upstairs to provide an escape route.
After the family was evacuated, men from the fire service arrived to help extinguish the blaze.
Abure and his family were subsequently taken to a private hospital for treatment.
The Labour Party condemned the attack on its National Chairman and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
The party expressed concern over the safety of its members and the growing trend of violence against political figures in Nigeria.
As the authorities investigate the incident, the Labour Party’s response and the outcome of the investigation will be closely watched.
The attack on Julius Abure raises questions about the security of political leaders and the need for measures to ensure their safety.
