Legal Experts Intervene in Body of Benchers Leadership Crisis

In a bid to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the Body of Benchers (BOB), a prestigious legal body responsible for admitting new lawyers and disciplining erring ones, more legal experts are intervening.

The dispute originated from a misunderstanding between the current Chairman of the BOB, Adegboyega Awomolo, and the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Austin Alegeh, after a controversial committee reconstitution.

Lere Fashola, the publisher of Esquire magazine and organizer of the Nigerian Legal Awards, urged the members of the BOB to settle their differences amicably instead of airing their grievances publicly.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining unity within the legal community, especially among its leaders.

Emeka Ngige, another senior legal practitioner, echoed Fashola's sentiments, advising all parties involved to seek peaceful resolutions to prevent sending negative signals to the legal community.

The dispute has also led to a lawsuit filed by Alegeh challenging his removal from the Appointments Committee, with Awomolo arguing that appointments are privileges, not rights.

Amid the controversy, the former Chairman of the BOB, Justice Mary Odili, denied her involvement in Alegeh's appointment, prompting Awomolo to issue a query to the Secretary of the BOB, Daniel Tela.

Tela defended his actions, stating that the secretariat typically follows the verbal or written instructions of the chairman.

As the legal community awaits the resolution of this leadership crisis, the intervention of legal experts highlights the importance of maintaining integrity and unity within the Body of Benchers.
