Lagos Warns Residents About Poisonous Plantain Chips

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has cautioned residents to be wary of any unwholesome practices in the processing of fried plantains, commonly known as “plantain chips.”

This warning comes in response to a viral online picture posted by an eyewitness, which allegedly shows a plantain chips seller adding polythene, also known as “rubber,” into the hot vegetable oil used for frying the plantains.

LASCOPA expressed deep concern the potential health implications that these dangerous practices may have on unsuspecting consumers.

The agency advised residents to exercise caution and be vigilant when purchasing plantain chips to avoid exposure to harmful substances and preventable food poisoning.

The agency is currently investigating this discovery and will take appropriate actions to protect consumers and hold accountable those responsible for the dangerous practice.

In the meantime, LASCOPA has urged members of the public to assist in reporting any unfriendly or unlawful practices among sellers of consumable items.

Residents are encouraged to contact LASCOPA via email or phone, and visit their offices at Ikeja and annex branches at Badagry, Bariga, Ikorodu, and Ikoyi-Obalende if they come across any similar cases.

In light of this alarming discovery, it is essential for consumers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety when purchasing and consuming plantain chips.
