Lagos State Government Issues Four-Day Ultimatum to Coastal Road Squatters

The Lagos State Government has given a four-day ultimatum to squatters occupying illegal shanties along the Lagos Coastal Road in the Mayegun, Lekki area of the state.

This decision comes after an inspection tour by Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab to various locations in the region.

The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has announced that all such illegal shanties and squatters, close to the Regional Road Alignment, must vacate the area by Thursday afternoon.

Enforcement will begin in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of the clean-up exercise, stating that it is a state-wide initiative.

He mentioned that notorious sites such as Ijora Under Bridge, Obalende Under Bridge, Apongbon Under Bridge, and Agege Red Rail line have already been cleared.

These areas are known to harbor criminals and pose a threat to residents. The government aims to prevent the reconstruction of these shanties by maintaining a consistent clean-up effort.

The Commissioner also announced that the team would visit Aboru, Command, and Abule-Egba to inspect ongoing work in the area.

He stressed that enforcement will commence this week at System 157 (Orchid Road) to open the 40-meter drainage, as people have built on the canal path and narrowed the primary channel, causing flooding in the area.

The Lagos State Government’s decision to issue an ultimatum to the Coastal Road squatters highlights their commitment to addressing environmental and safety concerns in the region.

This move is expected to improve the living conditions and security in the affected areas.
