Labour Unions Seek President Tinubu’s Intervention in Medical Director’s Suspension

Labour unions at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu chapter, have called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the suspension of their Medical Director, Professor Monday Igwe.

The unions include the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), and Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN).

In an open letter to the President dated March 5, 2024, the unions expressed their concerns about the suspension of Professor Igwe on September 20, 2023, following allegations from a civil society organization without proper investigation.

The letter was signed by the Chairman of JOHESU, Obinna Eze; President of ARD, Eric Ugwu; Dr. Ezea Christian; and Chairman of MDCAN, Dr. Nnabuchi Jane.

The unions have not received any feedback from the Ministry of Health’s investigation team, despite their full cooperation.

They urged President Tinubu to step in to ensure a transparent reinstatement of Professor Igwe, demanding a detailed report based on truth and public service rules.

The unions emphasized that Professor Igwe is known for his dedication and compassion and should be treated fairly and respectfully.

They argued that the prolonged suspension of the Medical Director not only destabilizes the hospital but also inflicts undue hardship on his family as his salary has been halted for several months.

The letter read in part: “We passionately appeal to you to leverage your esteemed office to urge the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to provide a comprehensive report predicated on truth and adherence to public service rule and extant circular on the investigation and transparently elucidate the rationale behind the prolonged suspension of our medical director.”

The unions believe that President Tinubu’s intervention will not only uphold the dignity of Professor Igwe but also reaffirm their faith in the principles of fairness and justice.
