Jurgen Klopp has emerged as the frontrunner to take over as Germany head coach after Julian Nagelsmann faces the axe. The German Football Association is moving to sever ties with Nagelsmann following Germany's shock World Cup exit in the Round of 32.

Nagelsmann received a €7 million severance offer during a three-hour meeting at DFB headquarters in Frankfurt on Thursday, according to German tabloid Bild. The 38-year-old's contract, extended until 2028 just last January, now appears set to end prematurely.

Germany lost to Paraguay on penalties in the knockout stage, marking a catastrophic tournament campaign. This represents the nation's third successive early World Cup exit, following group-stage eliminations in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf announced an immediate investigation into the team's failure. A final decision on Nagelsmann's future will come "by the beginning of next week at the latest", according to AFP's German sports subsidiary SID.

Klopp, who stepped away from Liverpool last year after nine successful seasons, is widely tipped for the role. Sky Germany and Süddeutsche Zeitung both report the 59-year-old is the overwhelming favourite to succeed Nagelsmann.

The legendary manager has since taken on the role of head of global football at Red Bull, where he oversees the company's multi-club network spanning Germany, Austria, Brazil, the United States and Japan. He has previously resisted the Germany job while managing at club level.

If appointed, this would mark Klopp's first managerial position since departing Anfield. The move would hand Germany access to one of football's finest coaches as they attempt to rebuild their reputation on the world stage.
