Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress, says Atiku Abubakar recognised his talents when the party chief named him as his spokesman. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today on Thursday, the actor-turned-politician claimed that Peter Obi let him down.
Okonkwo made these remarks just a day after Atiku gave him the spokesperson role. He revealed that he'd cut ties with Obi in 2024, concluding that the former Anambra governor lacked the strength to run the country.
"I've worked as a public affairs analyst since 2009, well before I ever knew Peter Obi," Okonkwo said. He recalled that he'd told reporters in July 2024 he was no longer speaking for Obi because the politician wasn't tough enough.
The Nollywood star said he'd found flaws in Obi that made him unsuitable to lead Nigeria. "I made it public," he stressed.
Okonkwo explained that once he'd finished working with Obi, he publicly announced the split so people would know he no longer represented him. "I went my own way and did my own job," he said.
He directly blamed Obi for the breakdown. "He was the one who betrayed me," Okonkwo told the station.
The move marks a dramatic shift for Okonkwo, who'd been closely linked to Obi and the Labour Party before shifting to the African Democratic Congress. His appointment as Atiku's spokesman signals the ADC is ramping up its 2027 presidential campaign.
