Dr. Nasir Idris, governor of Kebbi State, has launched a comprehensive investigation into how teachers' salaries are being paid and whether the minimum wage is being properly implemented.
The probe aims to uncover any financial irregularities affecting educators across the state.
On Monday, the governor established a seven-member panel headed by Prof. Malami Shehu Gulumbe.
The committee will examine salary disbursements and minimum wage compliance for primary school teachers statewide.
Speaking at the Government House during the committee's inauguration, Governor Idris stressed his personal stake in the inquiry. "I have a personal interest in this committee.
I know how much the teachers were earning before, and I also know how much I approved as their new minimum wage," he stated.
He charged committee members to work with integrity and without cutting corners. According to him, any form of compromise would not be tolerated under his watch.
The governor noted that he selected the panel members based on their credibility and capacity to deliver results. "I trust the committee members.
That is why I carefully selected credible individuals who will do the job thoroughly and professionally," he added.
Idris explained that the move came after recent discussions with the Nigeria Union of Teachers leadership. A town hall meeting also informed the decision to set up this investigative body.
The committee must determine how much money Local Governments send monthly to Local Government Education Authorities for teacher salaries. It'll also verify whether funds meant for salary payments and minimum wage implementation have been properly managed.
Investigators are tasked with identifying individuals responsible for any salary placement problems. They must distinguish between professional and non-professional staff on the payroll.
Committee members will recommend solutions for any problems they find during their work. The panel has exactly thirty days to complete its assignment and submit findings.
Prof. Gulumbe chairs the committee.
Members include Abubakar Muhammad, the Finance Commissioner, plus representatives from the Ministry of Local Government, SUBEB, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
Also serving are representatives from the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who serves as secretary. Malam Ahmed Idris, the governor's Chief Press Secretary, confirmed the one-month deadline on Monday.
