Kano Court Orders State Government to Compensate Emir for Rights Violation

A Federal High Court in Kano has ruled in favor of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, ordering the Kano State Government to pay N10 million in compensation for violating his fundamental human rights.

The judgment, delivered by Justice Simon Amobeda, found that the order given by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf for the arrest of Emir Bayero was unlawful.

The court stated that this order had effectively placed the Emir under house arrest, infringing on his freedom of movement and personal liberty.

The court restrained the Kano State Attorney General, the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Kano, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Air Force, and the Nigerian Navy from further interfering with Emir Bayero's rights.

Justice Amobeda stated that the Governor's directive to arrest Emir Bayero without lawful justification was a violation of his rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement.

The court ordered the Kano State Government to pay the Emir N10 million in compensation for the breach of his rights.

The court, however, refused to award costs for filing and prosecuting the suit, as the amount had not been specifically pleaded and strictly proved.

The case highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting the rights of individuals, including traditional rulers, in Nigeria.
