Jimi Lawal has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) primary election for Ogun State governor. Lawal is known to be close to former Kaduna Governor Mallam El-Rufai.
Three candidates contested the primary over the weekend. They were Lawal, Abiodun Collins Ogundipe, and US-based physician Dr.
Marie Abolaji Odusina.
Barrister Adebimpe Adelowo, who headed the election committee, announced results Monday in Abeokuta. She said voting took place across all 236 wards of the state.
Lawal secured 19,428 votes. Ogundipe polled 5,775 votes while Dr.
Odusina received 4,825 votes.
"Hon. Jimi Lawal, having scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner," Adelowo announced.
She confirmed he'll represent ADC in the 2027 general elections.
Adelowo expressed confidence in ADC's prospects. "We still remain the party to beat," she told officials at the secretariat.
According to her, the party remains united and focused. Preparations for next year's election are already underway, Adelowo noted.
She highlighted plans to mobilise supporters from grassroots level upward. Party officials are energised about their chances, she added.
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials observed the entire process. They monitored voting across the 236 wards throughout the weekend.
INEC representatives were impressed by what they witnessed. Party members turned out in large numbers and voted orderly, Adelowo said.
Results have been forwarded to party leadership. They went to the Chairman who oversees the State Congress, per party constitution.
Lawal's political background spans several years in public service. Between 2015 and 2022, he served in the Kaduna State Government.
During his time under El-Rufai's administration, he held key roles. He started as Special Adviser then rose to Senior Adviser and Counsellor.
His victory marks another significant step for ADC in Ogun. Party strategists now focus on mobilising voters ahead of 2027.
