President Donald Trump has urged both sides to show restraint after Iran launched retaliatory strikes against Israel. He said he'd been briefed on the situation and wants the Jewish state to exercise caution.
Trump noted that a peace deal ending the war is within reach. "No one was hurt in the missile attack," he told N12 television.
"If Netanyahu responds, this will continue and continue," the American leader warned. He's unhappy about Israel's recent military operations in the region.
According to Trump, the strikes weren't coordinated with Washington beforehand. "Israel had its strike and Iran had its strike," he said.
"We don't need another one."
Speaking to Israeli journalist Barak Ravid, Trump cautioned that further escalation will derail peace efforts. An IDF spokesperson called Iran's actions a grave mistake.
Israel's military confirmed it hit Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut's Dahieh district on Sunday. This came in response to rocket fire targeting Israeli territory.
The IDF posted video evidence of a Hezbollah tunnel network beneath Beaufort Ridge. It contained living quarters, power systems, and anti-tank and air defense equipment.
Military officials say they'd asked Lebanese Armed Forces to neutralize the site. Hezbollah blocked any such action, they claimed.
Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters defended its strikes as justified retaliation. Tehran wants Israel to halt attacks on southern Lebanon and the Dahieh area.
Iranian officials accused Jerusalem of violating ceasefires and escalating aggression against Lebanese civilians. They've threatened more strikes if Israel continues its offensive operations.
