International Women’s Day: Abia State First Lady Advocates for Investment in Women and Girls

In the celebration of International Women’s Day, the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, emphasized the importance of investing in women and girls, highlighting the positive impact it can have on society and the economy.

During the event held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Mrs. Otti advocated for increased investment in women and girls, arguing that empowering women is a catalyst for societal advancement, fostering economic growth, innovation, and social development.

She also vowed to lead the fight against drug abuse among girls and young women in the state, and promised to rehabilitate and empower victims of baby factories, while ensuring the prosecution of perpetrators of this heinous practice.

The Abia First Lady praised her husband, Governor Alex Otti, for his commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of women and girls.

She noted that his administration has appointed several women to key positions in the state government, including four women as Commissioners with sensitive ministry portfolios.

Mrs. Otti also announced special support for a visually impaired woman who produces perfumes, as well as the disbursement of cash for cooperatives to help women in the state do business and engage in agriculture.

Keynote speaker and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Professor Mrs. Elechi Asawala, called for the sensitization of women farmers on new innovations in farming and urged the government to engage women in sciences and research to help educate rural women on new trends in agriculture for better yields.

The event was attended by women from across the state, with many expressing their support for Mrs. Otti’s commitment to the advancement of women and girls in Abia State.
