Nigeria's electoral body has announced it will restart voter registration nationwide starting next month. The Independent National Electoral Commission says the exercise kicks off on Monday, 11 May 2026.
This marks the third and final phase of the registration programme. INEC suspended the previous phase on 17 April to allow time for cleaning up the voter roll.
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who chairs INEC's Information and Voter Education Committee, made the announcement in Abuja. He said the registration window will remain open until Friday, 10 July 2026.
Citizens who've just turned 18 are urged to register during this period. Those who missed earlier registration windows still have a chance to enrol.
INEC noted that registered voters can also use this window for other services. These include transferring registration to a new location, replacing damaged Permanent Voter Cards, and correcting personal information.
Eligible citizens can register online through INEC's portal or visit state and local government offices. The commission said logistical arrangements are complete across all states.
After the registration phase ends, INEC will display the voter register for public scrutiny. The claims and objections period runs from Thursday, 23 July to Wednesday, 29 July 2026.
During this window, Nigerians can check the list and report any errors or discrepancies. INEC stressed that maintaining an accurate register is everyone's responsibility.
The commission described voter registration as fundamental to Nigeria's democratic process. Officials appealed to citizens to take the exercise seriously and participate actively in verification.
INEC has urged Nigerians to present themselves for registration without delay. The commission promised that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure smooth conduct nationwide.
