The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abia, on Thursday, began the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive election materials ahead of Saturday’s Governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Rebecca Jim, said the commission began the distribution across the 17 Local Government Areas from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Jim said that the materials would be moved to the Registration  Area Centres (RAC) on Friday evening so as to enable them to get to the polling units early enough on Saturday.

She said that the list of Supervisory Presiding Officers had already been released, adding that they would join the Presiding Officers to make sure that the materials were properly sorted out.

According to her, by evening of Friday (March 17), they will go to the RAC and by 7:30 am latest on Saturday, all the materials would have got to the polling units.

She said that the elections would hold in all the units in the state and that all the flash points had been made known to the security agencies.

Jim said: “We had a meeting with the security agencies on Wednesday and they have assured us of safety of lives and property before,  during and after the elections.

“We are assuring the people of Abia, with God on our side, that we are going to conduct a free, fair, credible and transparent elections.”

She urged  the political parties to play the game according to the rule.

She also advised the electorate to come out en masse and cast their votes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at least 2.12 million registered voters are expected to cast their votes in the 4,062 polling units in the state.
