Imo Students Take to the Streets in Protest for Better Education and Improved Living Conditions

The protest, which took place on Friday, March 8, 2024, saw students from Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State University, Owerri (IMSU), Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, and Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, Ohaji, marching together in solidarity.

Their demands were clear: an end to the intimidation of students, the cessation of incessant fee hikes, and a halt to the extortion of students through the sale of handouts and textbooks.

The students also called for a serene and conducive environment in their schools to facilitate learning.

They appealed to the federal and state governments to provide their institutions with necessary medical equipment, electricity, boreholes, and other essential amenities.

Carrying placards with various messages such as “No More Increments Of Fees,” “Students Are Dropping Out Of School Due to Fees Increments,” and “Nigerian Students Are The Keys to The Future,” the protesters made a powerful statement to the government.

They emphasized that education is their right, not a privilege, and that their voices must be heard.

In response to the protest, the Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ahaneku Valentine Nzubechi, called for calm among the students.

He assured them that the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who is a NANS Patron, would listen to their concerns.

He also expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmad Tinubu, a known advocate for education and youth empowerment, would address the issues raised by the students.

The NANS Public Relations Officer, Comr. Achebe Chizzy, further emphasized the need for a complete overhaul of the tertiary education system in Imo State to improve the standard of education.

As the world watches the unfolding events in Imo State, the importance of education and the well-being of students cannot be overstated.

The students’ demands for better living conditions, improved educational facilities, and a conducive learning environment are crucial for their success and the future of Nigeria.
