The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recently stated that the Nigerian government should prioritize tackling food insecurity as its immediate concern.
The IMF's End-of-Mission statement, which followed the completion of the IMF Staff 2024 Article IV Mission to Nigeria, highlighted the need for the government to address the issue promptly.
According to the statement, the new government has inherited a challenging economic situation marked by low growth, low revenue collection, accelerating inflation, and external imbalances built over the years.
The IMF emphasized that addressing food insecurity is the top priority and welcomed the government's approval of a well-targeted and effective social protection system.
The IMF team, led by Axel Schimmelpfennig, met with key Nigerian officials during their visit to Lagos and Abuja from Feb. 12 to Feb. 23, 2024.
The team discussed the economic outlook, which is currently challenging, with GDP growth projected to reach 3.2% in 2024.
However, high inflation, Naira weakness, and policy tightening are expected to create headwinds.
In response to the food insecurity issue, the IMF welcomed the Nigerian government's release of grains, seeds, and fertilizer, as well as the introduction of dry-season farming.
The team stressed that addressing food insecurity is crucial, and the implementation of the social protection system will be vital in tackling the issue.
The IMF has urged the Nigerian government to prioritize food insecurity reduction as its immediate concern, given the challenging economic situation and the need to support vulnerable citizens.
