IBEDC Disconnects UCH from Power Supply Over Alleged N400 Million Debt

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has disconnected the University of Ibadan College Hospital (UCH) from power supply due to an alleged outstanding debt of over N400 million, which has accumulated over the past six years.

The move comes after multiple attempts by IBEDC to engage with the hospital’s management regarding the outstanding debt.

According to the company, UCH has displayed an uncooperative attitude towards addressing the issue.

IBEDC’s Chief Key Accounts Officer, Johnson Tinuoye, explained that the company has a fiduciary responsibility to its stakeholders and market operators to ensure timely and complete remittances.

The non-payment of electricity bills by UCH and other institutions has contributed to the nationwide issue of low power supply, as it hinders DISCOs’ ability to fulfill obligations to GENCOs and purchase gas for power generation.

In response to the disconnection, UCH’s public relations officer, Funmilayo Adetuyibi, denied the outstanding debt claim, stating that the current administration inherited the old bill and has been making payments of N45 million to N55 million monthly since January 2024.

The situation has sparked confusion and debate, as UCH operates over 70 diesel-generating sets, consuming diesel at 1,600 Naira per liter, which is significantly more expensive than the tariff of 74 Naira per kilowatt that IBEDC charges.

Furthermore, IBEDC has provided infrastructure to ensure 20-24 hours of dedicated power supply to UCH.

While acknowledging the importance of hospitals in society, IBEDC emphasizes the need for all customers to pay for electricity consumption promptly to ensure the viability of the sector.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has warned DISCOs of potential license withdrawal for non-performance, making it essential for all parties to work together to resolve the issue.
