The woman who recently tore her husband’s Nigerian passport, Mrs. Igiebor, has finally opened up about the reasons behind her actions.
In a candid video shared on social media, Igiebor, a content creator known for her TikTok videos featuring her family, revealed that the incident was the culmination of long-standing family issues that predated their return to Nigeria from Europe.
Speaking on Monday, Igiebor said, "This issue has been going on for a long time. And I had to do what I did. Don’t just judge me by my actions alone; I’m not a mad woman. I have endured so much. I have my reasons."
She added that if the incident had occurred in Europe, it might have caused her husband more stress. "I didn’t want him to go through too much, which is why I did it in Nigeria," she explained. "Many people at the airport saw me that day. It’s been a family issue all along. My husband can’t even speak about it. I’ve suffered with him, and now his family wants to erase all my efforts."
Igiebor admitted that her actions were intended to prevent her husband from returning to Europe. She expressed frustration over the years of pain she has endured, saying, "He knows I haven’t forgotten; I’ve just been pretending to move past it."
Apologizing to Nigerians and the immigration authorities for her actions, Igiebor accused her husband of neglecting her for his family, calling him a "mother’s boy" and lamenting that she has been left to suffer. "I did what I did to show him the pain I’ve been enduring," she said.
While Igiebor did not delve into specific details of the events leading up to the passport incident, she strongly hinted that deep-rooted family issues were at play.
The incident, which took place at Lagos Airport on Saturday, August 10, 2024, was captured in a viral video showing an agitated Igiebor tearing her husband’s passport. When questioned about her actions in the footage, she retorted, "Is it your passport?"
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has since launched an investigation into the matter. According to a statement released by NIS Public Relations Officer Kenneth Udo, the destruction of a Nigerian passport could violate Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015, which prohibits the willful destruction of travel documents. The NIS emphasized its commitment to enforcing the law and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s legal and diplomatic instruments.
