House of Reps Urges Tinubu to Review Oronsanye Report Before Implementation

The House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to comprehensively review the 2012 Oronsanye Report, along with other related reports and white papers, before implementing any changes.

This decision was made following the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance at the plenary on Thursday.

The motion was jointly moved by Kama Nkemkanma, Olumide Osoba, and Jonathan Gbefwi, who highlighted the importance of reviewing the Goni Aji Report, the White Paper released by the President Jonathan administration, the Ama Pepple White Paper, and the Ebele Okeke White Paper in line with current realities.

The Oronsanye Committee, set up in 2012 by the Jonathan administration, recommended the scrapping and merging of 220 out of the then-existing 541 government agencies.

The report also noted that the government’s parastatals and agencies’ functions were overlapping and suggested a reduction in statutory agencies from 263 to 161, the abolition of 38 agencies, the merger of 52, and the reversion of 14 to departments in ministries.

However, the implementation of the recommendations was not carried out under the previous administration, leading to concerns about the possible consequences of implementing a report that is now 12 years old.

The House of Representatives urged President Tinubu to take these concerns into consideration and review the reports in line with current realities, while also considering implementable alternatives that would have minimum unintended consequences.

This move by the House of Representatives highlights the importance of carefully evaluating and updating policies and recommendations to ensure that they are in line with the current needs and realities of the country.

It is hoped that President Tinubu will take this advice into consideration and make informed decisions regarding the implementation of the Oronsanye Report and other related reports.
