Hardship: Afenifere Urges Tinubu to Allow Food Importation to Combat Hunger

The Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere has called on the President Bola Tinubu-led government to temporarily allow the importation of essential food items to address the growing hunger crisis in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, Afenifere expressed concern over the level of hardship being experienced by Nigerians.

The group urged the President to ensure that staple food and other essential items are imported to “fill the yawning gap in food supply in the country.”

The group suggested that the importation should be for a short period of time, like “three to five months perhaps,” to allow for local production to catch up.

Additionally, Afenifere recommended that the government open food storages in the country and make special arrangements for all 774 local government areas to engage in crash agricultural production, including crops and livestock.

The group emphasized that this approach would ensure that local food would be available for harvest by the time the window of food importation closes.

Furthermore, they urged the government to support food merchants in reducing food prices to provide much-needed economic relief to the population.

Afenifere’s call for temporary food importation is a proactive approach to addressing the growing hunger crisis in Nigeria.

It is essential for the government to consider this proposal and take necessary measures to ensure that the food supply in the country is adequate and accessible to all citizens.
