Ardo Risku Muhammad, who led the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in Benue State, has been killed. He died in an armed ambush alongside his companion, Yakubu Isah.
Both men were attacked at Okwudu in Otukpo Local Government Area on their way home. Muhammad's eldest son, Muhammad Idris, told reporters the assault happened at 2:00pm.
Idris explained that his father had just left a peace meeting in Ohimini LGA. According to him, the Divisional Police Officer in that area had organized the gathering.
The meeting brought together herders and community members to discuss grazing-related complaints. Idris alleged the attackers killed both victims immediately after the ambush.
Gabriel Adole, Chairman of Ohimini LGA, confirmed the peace talks occurred. He told our correspondent the discussion went well before the two men departed.
Adole noted that Muhammad was killed once he entered Otukpo's territory. His associate was shot dead at the same location.
Maxwell Ogiri, the Otukpo Local Government chairman, acknowledged the killing happened in his area. He said tensions have risen significantly since the incident.
Ogiri appealed for residents to remain calm and patient. He promised authorities are working to restore peace to the locality.
Police have also confirmed the deaths. DSP Udeme Edet, the Benue Police Public Relations Officer, verified that the killings did occur.
No arrest has been made yet. Investigation into the incident continues.
