Gunmen ambushed a funeral convoy in Kogi State, kidnapping mourners who were transporting the corpse of Federal Road Safety Corps deputy commander Augustine O. Ikwue to Benue State for burial.
The attack occurred along the Ososo-Ajaokuta road, with the abductors seizing both the body and those accompanying it into the bush.
The kidnappers later abandoned the corpse near Ejule in Kogi State, but continued holding the mourners captive. Citizen journalist Meddy Olotu disclosed that the abductors are demanding ₦50 million for the release of the victims.
Olotu described the incident as deeply troubling, noting that the worsening insecurity has become so severe that even the deceased are no longer spared. "What kind of country are we living in?
Even the dead cannot rest in peace," he said.
The late Ikwue, known by the nickname "Etume Zero," was slated to be laid to rest in Upu community in Otukpo on Friday. The tragic incident has now disrupted those burial plans.
Olotu called on security agencies to step up rescue efforts and ensure those responsible face justice. He urged relevant authorities to act swiftly to free the abducted mourners and bring perpetrators to account.
