Innocent Omudu narrowly escaped death on Thursday when gunmen ambushed his convoy. He's the African Democratic Congress candidate for Otukpo/Ohimini in Benue State.
Omudu was heading back to Otukpo after winning his party's primary election. He'd been chosen as the consensus candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Attackers opened fire along the Onyagede-Ugboju road without warning. Several vehicles were damaged in the barrage of bullets.
A number of people sustained injuries during the assault. Omudu confirmed no one was killed despite the intense gunfire.
"We thank God that no life was lost during the attack," Omudu told reporters. "It was a frightening experience, but God saw us through," he added.
Officers from Idekpa Police Division in Ohimini responded quickly to the scene. They engaged the gunmen and forced them to retreat.
Local vigilante groups also played a crucial role in the response. Their swift action, combined with police efforts, prevented what could have been a tragedy.
Omudu praised the security operatives for their bravery and quick thinking. He also expressed gratitude to community vigilantes who answered the call.
Earlier that day, ADC leadership in the constituency had unanimously adopted him as their flag bearer. His only rival had stepped down from the race beforehand.
Omudu thanked party officials and members for their show of confidence. He pledged to work hard to represent the constituency well.
