Governor Umo Eno Launches Food Subsidy Initiative to Support Vulnerable Residents in Akwa Ibom

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has launched the Food Subsidy Initiative (SFI) to address the current food crisis and provide support to the “very poor” in the state.

The governor expressed concern about the prevailing hunger and starvation caused by the crisis and assured the people that the state government would intervene.

To ensure the scheme is not hijacked by politicians and friends of the government, Governor Eno directed the proper review of the state’s social register (SR).

Outlining the modalities for the SFI implementation, he tasked the committee to prevent the efforts from being thwarted by middlemen.

The governor explained that the social register would serve as a document for the bulk purchase intervention and that the activities of middlemen would be checked to enable the poorest of the poor to benefit maximally from the program.

During the First Sunday service in March at All Nations Christian Ministry International (ANCMI), Governor Umo Eno, along with his wife and top state functionaries, addressed the congregation and emphasized the importance of a seamless process.

Registered vendors will set up redemption centers, and targeted citizens will receive food vouchers to redeem at these centers for discounted purchases.

The governor stressed that the government is aware of potential attempts to make money off the program and warned mischief makers against thwarting the government’s efforts to stabilize the cost of staple food in the state.

Anyone caught will face the full weight of the law.

The Food Subsidy Initiative aims to provide much-needed relief to vulnerable residents in the face of the current food crisis in Akwa Ibom.

By implementing a social register and redemption centers, Governor Umo Eno hopes to ensure that the program reaches those who need it the most and prevents exploitation by middlemen.
