Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has called for a transparent investigation into the tragic incident that led to the death of 17 soldiers in the Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.
During a meeting with the Board of Enquiry constituted by the Defence Headquarters, the governor expressed his administration’s commitment to assisting the board with its investigations.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized the importance of ensuring that innocent citizens do not suffer further and that the true knowledge of the incident is brought to light.
He highlighted the efforts of the state’s Advisory and Peace Building Council and the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution in maintaining peace in Delta State.
The governor recounted a meeting held on Feb. 7, where the two warring communities of Okoloba and Okuama signed a peace accord.
He expressed shock and disappointment that the military’s peace mission resulted in such a tragic outcome.
Chairman of the Board of Enquiry, AVM David Ajayi, stated that the board is in Delta State to investigate the incident and gather facts from security agencies, community leaders, and community dwellers.
He emphasized that the board’s report would help enhance civil-military relations and ensure that economic activities could resume in the affected communities.
Governor Oborevwori assured the board of his administration’s support and promised to provide a position paper detailing the state’s role in the incident.
He urged the board to ensure that relevant stakeholders were invited to provide accounts of the events leading up to the crisis.
The call for a transparent investigation underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of the incident and ensuring that justice is served for all parties involved.
It is a step towards healing and reconciliation for the affected communities and the state as a whole.
