Governor Bago Urges Nigerian Government to Censor Social Media to Combat Fake News

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to censor social media platforms in the country to combat the spread of fake news and promote objective journalism.

During his decoration as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, Governor Bago emphasized the need for regulation to check the abuse of social media and ensure that conventional journalism practitioners uphold the standards of objective reporting.

Bago’s stance on social media regulation aligns with other politicians, including President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who have also called for regulated social media.

The governor praised journalists for their role in shaping democracy in Nigeria and urged them to remain vigilant as the “fourth estate of the realm” and watchdogs of society.

NUJ National President, Chris Isiguzo, presented Governor Bago with a certificate, recognizing his exemplary leadership qualities and transformative strides in various sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, good governance, and education.

As the debate on social media regulation continues in Nigeria, it remains to be seen how the government will address the concerns raised by Governor Bago and others regarding the spread of fake news and the need for objective journalism in the country.
