Nigerian telecommunications giant Globacom has denied claims that it owes interconnect charges to rival company MTN.
This comes in response to a public pre-disconnection notice issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 8, 2024, which stated that Globacom had failed to settle its outstanding debts despite repeated attempts at resolution.
According to a reliable source within Globacom, the disputed amount of N1.6 billion has already been paid without controversy.
The company also emphasized that it was the first to introduce the pay-per-second billing system, breaking the monopoly of foreign telecommunications companies operating in Nigeria.
The NCC’s disconnection notice, which was posted on the commission’s Twitter page, stated that Globacom would be partially disconnected from MTN’s network, preventing its subscribers from making calls to MTN but still allowing them to receive calls from the network.
The disconnection is set to take effect on January 18, 2024.
In response to the NCC’s decision, a Globacom official expressed disappointment, stating that a proper cross-checking of facts should have been done before concluding that the company was in debt.
The official also refuted the claim that Globacom owed any interconnect charges.
