Senator Gbenga Daniel has pulled out of Monday's APC senatorial primary in Ogun East. He cited security threats targeting his supporters as the reason.
Daniel, a former Ogun State governor, is locked in a bitter contest with incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun over the party's ticket. The two men have clashed repeatedly over the nomination.
In a Sunday statement, Daniel's movement directed all backers to boycott the primary. The group warned of dangerous "strange movements and miscreants" around the voting venue.
"We cannot expose our supporters to danger and mayhem," the statement read. It urged members to stay away for their protection.
General Olumuyiwa Okunowo, director-general of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu–Otunba Gbenga Daniel Movement, signed the statement alongside 34 others. The group made clear the risks were simply too high.
Daniel's spokesperson, Steve Oliyide, told reporters the senator won't compromise supporter safety. "Their safety is more important to us than the contest," he noted.
