Former Sierra Leone President Arrives in Nigeria Amid Alleged Treason Charges

Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has arrived in Nigeria on January 20, 2024, following his release from house arrest in Sierra Leone.

Koroma, who led the West African nation from 2007 to 2018, had been under investigation for his alleged role in a failed coup d’etat on November 26, 2023.

The former president was charged with four offenses, including treason, and was granted permission by the Sierra Leone High Court to leave the country for medical treatment in Nigeria.

The court’s decision was made in light of a request from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which had been closely monitoring the situation in Sierra Leone.

Upon his arrival in Nigeria, Koroma was welcomed by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Alieu Omar Touray, and other high-ranking officials.

The Nigerian government has agreed to host the former president on a temporary basis, allowing him to receive the medical care he requires while the legal proceedings against him continue in Sierra Leone.

The charges against Koroma have sparked controversy in Sierra Leone and across the region.

Supporters of the former president argue that the accusations are politically motivated, while others believe that the government is acting in the best interest of the nation.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings against Koroma will progress and what impact his case will have on the political landscape of Sierra Leone.

In the meantime, the former president will receive medical treatment in Nigeria, and the international community will be watching closely to see how this case develops.
