Residents of Ika Nation can breathe a sigh of relief as the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has commenced the de-silting of drainages to combat the threat of flooding. The project, which started on July 30, 2025, is aimed at ensuring the free flow of water and preventing future devastation in the area.
Speaking while supervising the work at Dein's Palace junction in Ika South Local Government Area, Hon. Cordelia Anyangwu, the DESOPADEC Board member representing the Ika ethnic nationality, proudly declared, "DESOPADEC IS WORKING!" She explained that the commission has made it a yearly practice to clear drainages and culverts to protect roads from floodwater damage. She further emphasised that this initiative is a priority of the current administration under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The comprehensive project covers several key areas, including Agbor-Obi in Ika South East, Owa-Ekei road in Ika North East, and the Abavo drain opening in Ika South. According to Comr. Iweka Kingsley, the team leader for the excavation crew, said the project is on track to be completed by the weekend, in line with the directives of the Board Chairman, Olorogun John Nani, and the Managing Director, Chief Festus Ochonogor.
The community has expressed overwhelming gratitude for the timely intervention. Favour Chukwuka, a shop owner at Olikeze junction, praised the DESOPADEC Board for the "massive work being done." Similarly, Comr. Igbenigun Clement, Secretary of the Agbor Youths, extended his thanks to Hon. Anyangwu for her tireless efforts in ensuring the drainage is thoroughly cleared.
Hon. Anyangwu also issued a stern warning to residents, advising them to "desist from throwing debris into the drainages." She announced plans to meet with the Council Chairman to establish a task force to monitor and punish offenders. The DESOPADEC team echoed this sentiment, appealing to the community to take ownership of their environment and stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
