First Lady Tinubu Calls for Capital Punishment for Kidnappers, Celebrates International Women’s Day

First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for state governors and lawmakers to prescribe capital punishment for those who engage in this heinous crime.

The statement was made on March 8, 2024, during a meeting with the National Women Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House in Abuja.

Senator Tinubu expressed her frustration with the ongoing kidnapping of innocent children, describing it as heart rendering and inhumane.

She emphasized that these criminals are targeting women and children, and as such, should be treated as cowards and dealt with accordingly.

“They are cowards. Our hearts bleed. I call on the state governments that once we take hold of them, they deserve capital punishment.

Why can’t they take men of their size, why are they touching women and children,” she said.

The First Lady went on to emphasize the importance of women’s role in society and their contributions to the nation’s development.

She highlighted the significance of International Women’s Day and celebrated it with the women and all other Nigerian women for their courage, resilience, and doggedness.

Senator Tinubu also spoke about her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which focuses on championing women’s causes and implementing various programs and initiatives nationwide.

The RHI’s motto, “Towards a better life for families,” reflects its commitment to investing in women’s education, resources, and opportunities to unlock their full potential.

The group of women leaders, led by the National Women Leader, Dr. Mary Alile, and her deputy, Zainab Ibrahim, thanked the First Lady for her impacts on the lives of Nigerians through her various interventions on the platform of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

They also requested her help in pressing for more inclusion in the activities of the current government.

Senator Tinubu’s call for capital punishment for kidnappers is a powerful statement that reflects her commitment to protecting women and children in Nigeria.

As the nation continues to grapple with the issue of kidnapping, it is crucial for the government to consider the First Lady’s proposal and take decisive action to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
