FG, Labour to evaluate implementation of MoU on Monday

The federal government and organised labour will hold a meeting on Monday, October 30, to evaluate the implementation of the 15-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that they signed on October 3.
The MoU, which prevented a nationwide strike by the labour unions, contained various measures to mitigate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on PMS on Nigerians. The meeting was initiated by the office of the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Some of the measures in the MoU include setting up a joint committee to review any proposal for wage increase or award and establish a framework and timeline for implementation; enrolling low-income earners in the Cash Transfer Scheme financed by the World Bank; and reviving the CNG conversion programme that was agreed upon with labour centres in 2021.

Other measures are reviewing the challenges affecting effective delivery in the education sector and proposing solutions for implementation; completing the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries; providing a framework for road maintenance and rail network expansion across the country; and evaluating all other demands submitted by the TUC to the Federal Government.

The objective of the meeting on Monday is to review the achievements made by the government in the last 30 days and address any difficulties or gaps in the execution of the MoU. The meeting will also deliberate on the issue of subsidy removal and its consequences for the economy and the people.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said that Labour would boycott any meeting with Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, whom they accused of scheming to undermine the agreement reached with the federal government. He said that Labour would only meet with representatives from the office of the Chief of Staff to the President, who had been facilitating previous meetings.
