FG Inaugurates Committee To Tackle Fake Degrees

The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to tackle the problem head-on.

The committee, which was established today, January 9, 2024, will focus on identifying and addressing the activities of degree mills that have been plaguing the Nigerian education system.

The decision to form the committee comes after an investigative report by a Daily Nigerian journalist, Umar Audu, exposed the rampant sale of fake degrees in neighboring countries like Benin Republic and Togo.

The report revealed how easy it was to obtain a degree within a short period and even proceed to serve under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman will lead the committee in its efforts to ensure the authenticity of academic qualifications and maintain the integrity of the Nigerian education system.

The committee’s formation is a crucial step in addressing the concerns of the public and the education sector as a whole.

The Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben Goong, shared the news with journalists in Abuja, stating that the committee’s inauguration will take place this afternoon.

As the committee begins its work, it is expected to collaborate with other relevant agencies to develop and implement effective measures to curb the proliferation of fake degrees in Nigeria.

The move is a significant step towards ensuring that academic qualifications are earned through genuine means and that the value of education in the country is upheld.

The Federal Government’s decision to establish an inter-ministerial committee to tackle fake degrees is a commendable step towards preserving the integrity of the Nigerian education system.

With the committee’s efforts, it is hoped that the issue of degree mills will be effectively addressed, and the value of education in Nigeria will be restored.
