FG commits to lifting 50 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030

The Federal Government has announced its plan to lift 50 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 42 months.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, made this known to journalists after paying a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at his office in Abeokuta on Friday.

Dr. Betta Edu also said that President Bola Tinubu is very concerned about the flood situation in some parts of Ogun and Lagos States and that she has come to offer humanitarian assistance to the affected people.

She said that her visit to Ogun State had two main objectives. The first was to provide relief materials to the flood victims and assess the extent of the damage. She said that she had seen the pictures and videos of the flooding and that she would visit the affected areas on Saturday.

The second objective, she said, was to ensure that Ogun State had a social register that aligned with the national social register so that the people of the state could benefit from the N25,000 conditional cash transfer programme that other states were enjoying.

She said that the governors had set up a team that worked with the national team to verify the beneficiaries of the programme and to ensure that they had their BVN, NIN, and house verification.

She also mentioned some other programmes that were tailored for Ogun State, such as the adire scheme, which aimed to support the production and marketing of adire fabric by men and women. She said that this was part of the plan to lift people out of poverty.

She added that there were other programmes, such as the traders moni, farmers moni, and headhunter programmes, that were designed to support the vulnerable with grants and loans to start or improve their businesses.

She said that all these efforts were in line with the president’s directive to lift 50 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 42 months and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
