Federal Government Tackles Quackery in Health Sector: New Legislation on the Horizon

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at sanitizing the health sector and eliminating the presence of quacks.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a courtesy visit to the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta.

The proposed legislation is a response to the growing concern over the prevalence of untrained individuals operating in the health sector, which has led to heinous acts such as organ harvesting.

The new regulations will focus on regulating the healthcare sector, particularly the private sector, which accounts for over 60% of the nation’s healthcare and currently operates with minimal supervision.

Dr. Alausa also highlighted the government’s plans to increase the production of healthcare providers, starting with the admission of 10,000 medical students and 68,000 nursing students annually.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s healthcare system and ensure that Nigerians have access to quality healthcare services.

The Federal Government is also in the process of launching a programme to regulate the standard of healthcare across the country, with the expectation that state governments will establish their own regulatory bodies.

This move is intended to ensure that healthcare facilities and diagnostic centers are held accountable for their practices and that illegal activities, such as organ harvesting, are eradicated.

Governor Abiodun expressed his support for the Federal Government’s efforts and pledged to replicate any action aimed at eliminating quackery in the health sector.

He emphasized the importance of having adequate health facilities and qualified manpower in Ogun State, which is the industrial, educational, and religious hub of Nigeria.

The proposed legislation and increased intake of medical students and nurses are expected to significantly improve the quality of healthcare services in Nigeria and address the shortfall of medical personnel in government health facilities.

The Federal Government’s commitment to tackling quackery and ensuring improved service delivery in the health sector is a positive step towards achieving a more robust and efficient healthcare system for the benefit of all Nigerians.
