Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State received an Award of Excellence from the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO). The honour recognises his commitment to inclusive governance and social protection delivery.

The ceremony took place in Abuja at the Transcorp Congress Hall during a stakeholder engagement with local government chairmen. NASSCO is a Federal agency operating under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal praised the Federal Government, the World Bank, and development partners backing Nigeria's social protection reforms. He highlighted the expansion of the National Social Register and integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) as key achievements.

According to him, the timing of this engagement is crucial and strategic. Lawal noted that in conflict-affected states like Zamfara, social protection has become more than welfare—it's now vital for governance and security.

Insecurity in Zamfara has displaced thousands and disrupted livelihoods. Women, children, the disabled, and rural communities face heightened vulnerability to food insecurity and economic hardship.

The governor stressed that social protection interventions need better coordination and transparency. He emphasised that resources must be data-driven and targeted to reach those most in need.

Local Government Areas play a critical role in implementation. Lawal said grassroots mobilisation and community engagement are essential for success on the ground.

He noted that linking NIN with the Social Register improves credibility and reduces duplication. But technology alone cannot solve these challenges without strong local governance and accountability.

Zamfara State supports stronger coordination between Federal, State, and Local Government authorities. The governor also called for enhanced collaboration with development partners in the social protection sector.

Lawal advocated for inclusive development beyond cash transfers. His vision includes livelihoods programmes, skills training, agriculture, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion initiatives.

Such interventions would help vulnerable populations transition from dependency to sustainable participation. This approach addresses root causes rather than just symptoms.

Dr Funmi Olotu, NASSCO's National Coordinator, presented the award to Governor Lawal. She stated that the recognition reflects his administration's dedication to improving social protection outcomes.

Olotu commended the governor's efforts in promoting inclusive governance across Zamfara State. The award underscores the importance of leadership commitment to vulnerable populations.
