FCCPC Exposes Misleading Rice Weight Claims in Abuja’s Garki Modern Market

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) uncovered a syndicate involved in deceptive rice weight claims at Garki Modern Market in Abuja.

The commission discovered that bags of rice labeled as 25kg and 50kg did not contain the claimed amount of product, leading to consumer exploitation and deception.

The FCCPC has taken swift action against the perpetrators, issuing summons and requiring a written undertaking to cease these deceptive practices.

The commission has also established a Mutual Supervisory Understanding (MSU) to monitor compliance and ensure that consumers receive full value for their money.

As Nigeria’s inflation continues to rise, with food inflation reaching 37.92% in February and rice prices soaring to around N70,000 for a 50kg bag and N35,000 for a 25kg bag, the FCCPC’s efforts to protect consumers from deceptive practices are more important than ever.

The commission reminds consumers to be vigilant and demand that the weight of rice packages aligns with the stated claims, urging them to report any inconsistencies through the complaint tab on their website.

By enforcing the provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), the FCCPC aims to create a fair and transparent marketplace for all.

The FCCPC’s actions demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that businesses adhere to fair trade practices.

As Nigeria grapples with rising food prices and inflation, the commission’s vigilance in enforcing product claims and combating deceptive practices is crucial in safeguarding the welfare of its citizens.
