Kayode Fayemi, the former Ekiti governor, has disclosed his role in orchestrating a greeting between Peter Obi and President Bola Tinubu at the Vatican. The encounter happened during Pope Leo XIV's inauguration ceremony.

Speaking on Thursday via State Affairs podcast, hosted by Edmund Obilo, Fayemi explained what transpired behind the scenes. He noted that Obi was initially reluctant to approach the president.

According to him, Obi feared negative media interpretation of any interaction with Tinubu. Fayemi convinced the former Labour Party candidate to offer a handshake anyway.

The photograph surfaced publicly on May 18, 2025, when President Tinubu's media adviser, Bayo Onanuga, posted it on X. It showed all three men together at the Vatican event.

Not everyone believes Fayemi's account of events. Obiasogu David, a prominent Obi supporter, accused the former governor of seeking attention by invoking Obi's name.

David's criticism suggests lingering tensions within opposition circles. The Vatican meeting continues stirring debate among political observers.
