Falana Faults Army Chief’s Statement on Arms Bearing in Nigeria

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana  has taken issue with the statement of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya, who argued that Nigerians do not have the right to bear arms.

Falana countered this claim, citing the Nigerian constitution and the right to self-defense.

According to Falana, the Nigerian constitution does allow for citizens to bear arms, provided they have a valid license to do so.

He emphasized that self-defense is a fundamental right and that the possession of firearms for this purpose should be regulated, not prohibited.

Falana’s statement comes in the wake of increased insecurity in the country, with many calling for the right to bear arms as a means of protecting themselves and their communities.

The Army Chief’s statement, however, has sparked a debate on the legality and practicality of such measures.
