EU Supports Niger Delta Initiatives for Peace and Development

The Federal Government of Nigeria has emphasized the importance of peace and security in the Niger Delta, a key region of the country.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, stated that in an atmosphere where there is no peace, there would not be a government.

In a recent event, development organizations, including Search for Common Ground (SFCG), Stakeholders Democracy Network (SDN), Academic Associate Peace Works (AAPW), and Partnership Initiative for the Niger Delta (PIND), launched a transformative project aimed at fostering sustainable change.

The project, funded by the European Union (EU), seeks to counter the root causes of conflict and promote inclusive community security approaches.

The Country Director of SFCG Nigeria, Fatima Abubakar Madaki, highlighted the significance of collaborative peacebuilding efforts between partners, communities, government, security agencies, and the private sector, as well as the international community.

The project closely aligns with relevant state, regional, and national initiatives aimed at addressing conflicts and criminality in the region.

The Deputy Head of the European Delegation, Zissimos Vergos, stressed the importance of political commitment from the federal and state governments and a demonstration of sustainable change.

The EU aims to support Nigeria in achieving its goal of becoming the giant of Africa – a secure, inclusive, and prosperous nation.

The EU-backed transformative project in the Niger Delta region is a significant step towards fostering peace, security, and development in the area.

It emphasizes the importance of collaboration and political commitment to address conflicts and promote sustainable change in the region.
