Escalating Conflict Threatens Last Major Hospital in Gaza

In the midst of escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas, concerns are mounting over the fate of the largest remaining hospital in Gaza, Nasser Hospital.

As Israeli forces continue to bombard the city of Khan Younis, the hospital has been caught in the crossfire, with fighting reportedly taking place within meters of the facility.

Nasser Hospital, which has been providing vital care to hundreds of wounded patients a day, is now at risk of closure, further limiting the already scarce trauma care available in the region.

According to the United Nations, two-thirds of Gaza’s hospitals have ceased functioning, and the loss of Nasser Hospital would be a devastating blow to the area’s healthcare infrastructure.

The Israeli military has accused Hamas fighters of operating from the hospital, a claim that the staff has vehemently denied.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials have also claimed that Hamas has used other hospitals in Gaza as military infrastructure, justifying their attacks on these facilities.

As the conflict continues, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening. The violence and bombardments have made it nearly impossible for medical care to be delivered, and there are fears that the situation will only deteriorate further.

The international community has called for a ceasefire and for both sides to respect the neutrality of hospitals and other medical facilities.

It remains to be seen whether these calls will be heeded, but for now, the fate of Nasser Hospital and the people of Gaza hangs in the balance.
