The Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Olorogun Arthur Akpowowo, has dismissed concerns over the defection of Hon. Erhiatake-Ibori Suenu to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying that it's of no consequence to the PDP,
The Deputy Speaker who stated this in a media chat, said her defection is within her constitutional rights.
Erhiatake-Ibori, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC, sparked reactions within political circles. Akpowowo expressed disappointment over her decision, recalling the vigorous campaign efforts he shared with her during the last election. "It is disheartening because it feels as though our collective efforts were in vain," he lamented.
He further highlighted the issue of party defection, stating that, "In Nigerian politics, cross-carpeting has become a norm, even though the Constitution addresses it clearly." He cited Section 68(1)(g) of the Nigerian Constitution, which stipulates that lawmakers must vacate their seats upon defecting unless their party experiences division or merges with another party. Despite these provisions, Akpowowo noted the persistent disregard for the law, driven by political self-interest.
"The honorable thing for her to do is resign and recontest her seat under the APC," Akpowowo declared, adding that the PDP has already taken steps to reclaim her seat. He emphasized the need for adherence to constitutional principles, describing defection as a "dishonor" to the party that sponsored her victory.
Remaining optimistic, Akpowowo reaffirmed PDP’s strength in Ethiope East, projecting another victory in 2027. "The PDP is strong here. We will consolidate on our successes and win again in the next election," he confidently stated.
