Michael Emenalo, the former Super Eagles defender and ex-Chelsea technical director, has stepped down from his role as chief football executive at the Saudi Pro League. The league announced his departure on Tuesday, confirming that his contract had expired since he joined the organisation in 2023.

Emenalo also led the Saudi Pro League's Player Acquisition Center of Excellence during his time there. The Saudi Pro League issued a statement thanking him for his work and wishing him well in future ventures.

Speaking to The Athletic about his departure, Emenalo reflected on what the league had accomplished during his tenure. He said the Saudi Pro League's transformation represented an "audacious ambition" that many observers had initially dismissed as unrealistic.

"When I joined SPL's transformation journey in 2023, what struck me most was the audacity of its ambition," he told the publication. "We set out to do something few believed possible, on a timeline fewer still thought realistic."

According to him, his team had successfully put in place the standards and frameworks that the league would need for long-term sustainability. He noted that establishing this foundation mattered more to him than anything else he'd achieved.

"This foundation is, to me, the achievement that matters most," Emenalo said. "There is still work to be done to develop the league and to grow football across Saudi Arabia, but I believe I leave our league on a strong footing, well positioned for continued success."

The 52-year-old described his time in Saudi Arabia as a genuine pleasure and said he'd valued learning about the country's culture. He expressed gratitude to everyone who had supported him, particularly the Saudi Pro League's staff and football development department.

Emenalo, whose son Landon is an academy player at Chelsea, wants to return to Europe to be nearer his family. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the Saudi Pro League's recent expansion efforts.
