The newly appointed Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, has launched a 1 billion naira Innovation Fund at the university’s 28th convocation ceremony on April 3-4, 2024.

This initiative, which specifically targets agro-tech enterprises founded by students and graduates of the institution, underscores the critical role of agriculture in Nigeria’s economy and the urgent need for innovation to address food security challenges.

Addressing thousands of graduands, faculty, and guests, Dr. Olowolafe emphasized the importance of agriculture as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy and highlighted the potential for growth and innovation within local agricultural communities.

He stressed that the Innovation Fund aims to empower students and graduates to create and develop cutting-edge solutions in the agricultural sector.

In addition to the agro-tech fund, Dr. Olowolafe proposed the utilization of the university’s fertile lands for agricultural purposes, encouraging students to lease small plots and gain hands-on experience in farming, while also earning a living.

This initiative aims to foster a culture of self-sufficiency and innovation among students, enabling them to contribute to food security and economic growth in Nigeria.

The Chancellor also announced plans to establish a platform for 100 of the university’s brightest minds to participate in global business process outsourcing, providing them with an opportunity to contribute to the world economy and hone their skills.

Dr. Olowolafe thanked the Visitor of the university and Governor of Ekiti State, His Excellency, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, for appointing him as Chancellor, and expressed his commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development within the university and beyond.

The launch of the 1 billion naira Innovation Fund marks a significant milestone in the university’s history and demonstrates the institution’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs and innovators.

By providing essential funding and support, EKSU aims to empower its students and graduates to create a lasting impact on Nigeria’s agricultural sector and contribute to the nation’s food security and economic growth.
