…Calls on Deltans to support Okowa through prayers
The Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau,
Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has said that former governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa’s recent arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as reported by the media, does not tarnish his distinguished reputation.
Recall that the operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested and detained former Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa over accusations of misappropriating N1.3 trillion in state funds.
The arrest took place on Monday, with officials alleging that Okowa diverted funds intended as part of the 13% derivation allocation designated for oil-producing states.
However, Dr. Oghenesivbe, in a statement on Monday night, underscored the principle of presumption of innocence, affirming that under the law, Senator Okowa remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. He noted that the EFCC’s process often includes inviting individuals based on allegations, which may or may not be substantiated.
"Senator Okowa fully cooperated with the EFCC and did not evade the country, unlike some high-profile cases under investigation," Dr. Oghenesivbe said, dispelling any misconceptions that Okowa might have attempted to avoid the inquiry.
As Okowa’s former Executive Assistant on Communications (2017-2023), Dr. Oghenesivbe appealed to the people of Delta State to remain patient, trust in due process, and keep the former governor in their prayers. He expressed confidence that Okowa’s innocence may ultimately be affirmed at the conclusion of the EFCC’s investigation.
“The news of former governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa's arrest by the EFCC is widely circulating on social media, but it’s important to remember that an arrest based on allegations does not constitute proof of guilt,” Dr. Oghenesivbe remarked. “In criminal proceedings, an arrest is merely a step in response to a petition filed with the commission. Guilt can only be determined by a competent court.”
He added, “There is no need for alarm. Let us keep our fingers crossed and pray for Senator Okowa during this challenging period.”
