Edo Impeachment Panel Adjourns Again, Insists on Final Hearing Date

The seven-man panel investigating the impeachment petition against Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has once again adjourned its sitting, this time to Friday, April 5, 2024.

The panel, led by Justice S Omonua, emphasized that this adjournment would be its last in the matter.

The panel’s decision to adjourn came after the defendant, represented by Prof. Oladoyin Awoyale, SAN, withdrew from participating in the panel proceedings following a ruling against his motion.

Awoyale had previously urged the panel to comply with a Federal High Court, Abuja, order by J.E. Ekwo, which required the panel to show cause for not maintaining the status quo pending the determination of the case on April 8, 2024.

At the end of the day’s sitting, the defendant was absent, except for the counsel representing the complainant.

Justice Omonua stated that the panel had adjourned to allow the defendant to present his defense, but since the defendant was not present to do so, the panel rescheduled the hearing for April 5, 2024.

The ongoing impeachment proceedings against the Edo State Deputy Governor have drawn significant attention from the public and the media.

The outcome of these proceedings may have a considerable impact on the political landscape of Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.

As the panel insists on its final adjournment date, all eyes will be on the defense’s presentation and the panel’s ultimate decision.
